Take Scene: A TV Line-Up for Fall Indulgence
November 10, 2018Surely everyone can attest to the overwhelming desire for a brain nap this season. Especially as the air continues to go into a temperature decline, our beds grow more tempting to stay in and I'm gonna give you more reasons to do so. I've been lacking attentiveness for what's good in the streaming sphere myself, but have taken my much needed nightly downtime to catch up on a few and took the liberty of compiling them for you all to peruse.
The Guest (Korea)
Genre: Supernatural / Thriller / Crime / Horror (Trigger Warning: Blood & Gore)
Cast: Kim Dong Wook, Kim Jae Wook, Jung Eun Chae
Network: OCN
Since the end of Korea's Life of Mars remake, I felt an empty spot in my heart until The Guest came along. LoM is still my #1 this year but this trio made me anticipate every week's new episodes. Yoon Hwa Pyung is a psychic born into a shaman family that ends up in the midst of a serious ghost possession problem that results in a series of murder-suicides in his village. 20 years later, the same evil spirits return to wreak havoc and reunite Hwa Pyung with two similar-aged kids from his past, a Catholic priest and female detective, to try and get rid of "The Guest" once and for all.
Penny Dreadful (British-American)
Genre: Horror / Drama (Trigger Warning: Blood & Gore)
Cast: Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Reeve Carney, Timothy Dalton, Harry Treadaway
Network: Showtime
Where to Watch: Netflix
If gothic horror literature is your thing this series is a must-watch. Penny dreadfuls in the 19th century were weekly horror/crime tales you could purchase for a penny each. Following this reference, the storyline plays off various characters from that era and genre such as Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, Dracula, and Van Helsing.
The Rise of Phoenixes (China)
Genre: Historical / Drama / Political
Cast: Ni Ni & Chen Kun
Network: Hunan TV
Where to Watch: Netflix
As many historical dramas go, this one is adapted from the novel Huang Quan by Tanxia Guiyan. A powerful casting duo heads the 70-episode story, leaving you constantly engaged in the plot wand their electrifying chemsitry with no room to fall asleep. After being wrongfully accused of a crime, Feng Zhi Wei poses as a man to sneak into Qingming Academy while unaware of the truth behind her family history. Along the way she befriends the crown prince, Ning Yi who holds his own guise in front of court officials while calculating revenge against those who wronged his brother.
Las Chicas Del Cable (Spain)
Genre: Drama
Cast: Blanca Suárez, Ana Fernández, Nadia de Santiago, Maggie Civantos
Network: Netflix
Set in the late 1920's, the first telecommunications company comes to fruition in Madrid. The series follows four women as they each find their own path as working women, all while dealing with themes of sexuality, domestic abuse, sexism, and breaking traditions. For fans of American shows like Gossip Girl and Mad Men or any in search of a strong female-led cast.
