Style Guide: Jackets to Elevate Your Look and Keep You Feeling Cozy

Can't promise you the air of Cate Blanchett's otherwordly confidence will waft its way to you after reading through this post, but I can steer your wardrobe in the right direction.
Jackets lie on a broad spectrum of outerwear that can do a whole lot more than keeping your insides from turning into a frozen meat section. Thick jackets, light jackets, bombers, blazers, leather, faux fur.. Adding a jacket to your fit can freshen up a fit and give it an edge you might not have thought you could pull off.
As I can only assume most of you know the basic styles available, I'd like to introduce a selection of possibilities within the realms of what's trendy and high fashion while still being versatile and accessible to those of us without designer sponsorships.

Blazers as much as they are associated with business attire, can be an easy fix for a casual look too. Purchasing one with a looser fit makes it feel less stiff and starchy (words that also remind you way too much of the office environment) which promotes that effortlessly put together aura while keeping you more comfortable when you're going about your day. Plaids and neutrals are easy to pair with anything else in your closet but if you want to play with your plain white tees and jeans, don't be afraid to buy one in a brighter tone. The classic silhouette will alleviate any "loudness" you might be concerned about when it comes to trying bolder colors.

I AM GIA started this teddy bear craze within the last 2 years and it's not all hype. Aside from being utterly adorable, these coats are cozy to the core. Since they purposely run large, you can wear these with as many layers as you need underneath without looking like a stuffed sausage. You can't go wrong with the classic camel but any muted colors, even burgundy, pairs well with just about anything you've got.

Chanel has perfected the tweed suit sets time and again but ever since Blackpink's Jennie became their ambassador I swear she birthed a new layer of obsession with them for me. It's Audrey realness, people. If you wanna look like a rich, classy, gala-attendee level baddie... tailored tweed jakcets are where it's at. I personally like them with the color-accented plaid/houndstooth fabrics but the solid white and cream ones are sure to make you walk around thinking you're a duchess.

Step 1 in the book on "How to be a Mob Wife" has arrived. You're gonna feel luxe in this no matter how you style it, so don't let it collect dust waiting on special occasions. Leopard is technically a neutral (as are stripes, dots, plaid, and houndstooth) so you can slap on your fave t-shirt and jeans, a slip dress, a turtleneck and straight leg trousers... Whatever it is, you're gonna look like a rockstar.

Mixed material jackets have been my favorite incorporation into fall/winter wear in recent years because of their 70s reminiscence and how at whatever price point they may be, they make you look like you're wearing something maybe one tier from being on the runway. I included this one in particular because I own it and it's quickly become one of my favorite finds. If you're feeling really lazy or stuck when getting ready, something like this at the ready can help propel you out the door before you're late to the party. (I also have this suede x leather one and I highly recommend investing in something similar although this one's sold out)

Bolero jackets are modeled after the Spanish matadors' chaquetillas which are cropped with structured shoulders and often embroidered along the chest. These aren't worn enough that you'll fade into the crowd and can actually make you look taller and broader thanks to the way they're tailored. A similar elegant style to this would be a cape blazer and either one could be incorporated into both daytime business casual or night out chicness.

Typically smoking jackets carry the persona of this rich, old white guy smoking a pipe in his study before a murder mystery or some form of infidelity. I think it's time for a rebrand. Let's throw away its messy, stale velvet past and see it in a new light. Same silhouette, but now we've got airier fabrics and Gucci Granny patterns that don't age you but make you look like you went on the best thrifting bend of your life.
